IRO joins Uganda Law Society’s inaugural Digital Transformation Festival to champion Digital Security for All

The Integrated Refugee Organization (IRO) is proud to partner with the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) and other key stakeholders at the Digital Security Clinic, a flagship feature of the Uganda Law Society’s (ULS) first-ever Digital Transformation Festival. This landmark event is taking place on 14–15 August 2025 at the prestigious Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort.

The festival, affectionately known as #TechFest, is a bold new platform where law, technology, and innovation converge. It brings together legal practitioners, policymakers, technology experts, and civil society to explore how digital tools can improve access to justice, strengthen democratic governance, and safeguard rights in an increasingly connected world.

A high-level gathering with national impact

Gracing the festival is Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of Uganda, whose attendance underscores the national importance of digital transformation in the justice sector. His presence highlights government commitment to modernizing legal services, ensuring digital inclusion, and protecting fundamental freedoms in the digital age.

The Digital Security Clinic: Building resilience against digital threats

At the heart of IRO’s participation is the Digital Security Clinic, where we will work alongside CIPESA and other partners to equip participants with practical tools and skills to protect themselves and their organizations from cyber threats. From secure communication practices and device protection to privacy rights and digital incident response, the clinic is designed to strengthen the resilience of lawyers, journalists, activists, and other rights defenders—both online and offline.

A Festival of Innovation, Learning, and Opportunity

Beyond digital security, the festival offers:

  • Hands-on legal tech studios showcasing cutting-edge tools for practice management and case tracking
  • Inclusive justice access initiatives to make legal services more affordable and transparent
  • Networking opportunities with innovators, legal experts, and human rights defenders

Why it matters

As Uganda and the wider region navigate rapid technological change, events like the Digital Transformation Festival are critical in ensuring that technology serves as a bridge to justice, not a barrier. IRO reaffirms its mission to defend and empower at-risk communities especially exiled human rights defenders, journalists, and activists through digital safety, knowledge sharing, and collaborative advocacy.

We look forward to building stronger digital safeguards together.
