IRO partners with CIPESA to deliver Digital Security Helpdesk at #KTASymposium2025

The Integrated Refugee Organization (IRO) is a non-profit organization based in Kampala, Uganda, dedicated to empowering refugees, exiled human rights defenders (HRDs), journalists, and civil society activists through protection, capacity building, resilience initiatives. Among its core programs is the Digital Security Helpline and Resource Center, which provides rapid response support, personalized training, and mentorship to enhance the digital resilience and safety of HRDs, civil society activists and journalists. Through partnerships with organizations such as CIPESA, IRO continues to strengthen local capacity to respond to digital threats and promote secure digital practices across Africa.

Strengthening digital resilience on the ground

On October 24, 2025, IRO joined forces with the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) to operate a Digital Security Helpdesk during the #KTASymposium2025 in Kampala. The initiative was part of a broader effort to promote digital resilience, data protection, and cybersecurity awareness among participants from Uganda’s media, NGO, and tech communities.

Providing hands-on technical and cybersecurity support

The Digital Security Helpdesk offered on-site technical assistance, device diagnostics, and personalized cybersecurity support to participants. Many attendees approached the helpdesk with challenges such as forgotten passwords, malfunctioning devices, malware infections, and software vulnerabilities.

Key services provided included:

  • Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning devices (phones and laptops)
  • Software updates and antivirus installations
  • Secure account recovery and configuration
  • Installation of Antivirus and VPN tools
  • Distribution of Titan Security Keys for stronger authentication
  • Guidance on safe app use, password hygiene, and data backup practices

The Digital Security Helpdesk at #KTASymposium2025 was a success, assisting participants in resolving critical device issues and reinforcing essential cybersecurity habits. The collaboration between IRO and CIPESA demonstrated the importance of real-time, accessible digital safety support in building Uganda’s digital resilience ecosystem.

Through this engagement, IRO reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the digital security of vulnerable and exiled communities, advancing a safer and more inclusive digital environment for all.
