On 9 April 2026, RELON Uganda, in collaboration with the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), convened a meeting in Kampala bringing together 17 leaders from Refugee-Led Organizations (RLOs) to discuss climate pathways in Uganda.
The Integrated Refugee Organization (IRO) participated as an RLO working at the intersection of climate change, digital rights, and human rights, including support to Exiled Human Rights Defenders (EHRDs) and advocacy on land and extractive rights.
As climate change continues to affect displaced populations, the meeting provided a platform for refugee leaders to reflect on environmental challenges impacting their communities and explore practical, locally driven responses.
Discussions focused on strengthening refugee-led climate action, with emphasis on:
- Locally-led adaptation approaches
- Peer learning and collaboration among RLOs
- Inclusive and climate justice-oriented programming
Participants highlighted the critical role of RLOs in developing community-based, sustainable solutions.
The meeting reinforced the importance of collaboration between refugee-led networks and international partners in advancing inclusive climate action. It also underscored the need to support refugee participation in climate dialogue and decision-making processes.
This engagement marks an important step toward strengthening refugee-led responses to climate change in Uganda, while promoting resilience, inclusion, and community-driven solutions.
